Being Connected

I watched a BBC Iplayer program about The Noughties on the veritable BBC3 , I didn’t make it very far through the program as roughly 5 and a half minutes in I was greeted by Chloe Madeley who in my mind is one of the most irritating human beings ever to have been conceived.

What was interesting up until Chloe Madeley made a very PR friendly appearance, perhaps cementing the fact that she is a no hoper, was the first 4 minutes which seemed to be talking about how (and I agree) technology, noticeably mobile communications has really been what has made The Noughties something to be remembered. Probably best to forgot about the increase of violence on the streets and the sheer amount of binge drinking going on!

Before 2000 to be honest not many young people had a pay as you go phones or even a coloured screen phone. I remember the first time I had a phone: it was completely rubbish in terms of what ‘apps’ it had (none) and literally did what it said on the box, the inclusion of “smileys” on my next phone was something truly to be celebrated.

Maybe slightly more advanced then I remember!

Maybe slightly more advanced then I remember!

I remember Faceparty a predecessor of Facebook coming into to play and being amazed that I could spend all day chatting to veritable beauties many miles away thanks to my dial up connection. It was incredible. Then Myspace came around and we all got a bit friendly again with more people we didn’t know, then Facebook which stopped it being so easy to contact hot chicks. This decade has been good for the reason that actually contacting people has been made so much easier by Programs like Windows Live Messenger Mobile or Skype/Skype Mobile

Its interesting to think also about how far networks and connectivity have come in the last few years from the early days of the painfully slow WAP connections to now a fast 3G Mobile Broadband signal which operates well despite there being literally millions of people using its service. Lets hope that the companies who sell the products really understand that priority should be made in improving services now, rather then allowing for a quality/speed decline which will in the long term effect sales. Consistency seems to be key.

Hopefully the next generation of products will be geared for greater speeds and better technology.

The real question is “How connected are you?”
