Esteemed English fashion designer Stella McCartney is putting her skills were her heart is by designing T-shirts in support of Comic Relief, a British charity that aims to alleviate property through humour, entertainment and laughter. Considering her mother’s history in activism, working with Comic Relief towards a good cause comes as no surprise. We take a closer look at her work with the charity and the T shirt designs.
The Comic Relief T Shirts
The T shirts were designed as a capsule collection and feature iconic images of Tommy Cooper (a masterful British comic), The Beatles (Paul McCartney is Stella’s father after all), Marilyn Monroe and Kate Moss. However, all of these great individuals sport a red nose in support of Red Nose Day, a televised fundraising event that will be held in the 15th March. Comic Relief is one of Stella McCartney’s favourite charities and she stated that it was rewarding to see the success of the T shirts.
The Comic Relief T Shirt Campaign
To complement Stella McCartney’s Comic Relief T shirts, a campaign was created by her sister Mary and former fashion model and Victoria’s Secret Angel gone fashion photographer Helena Christensen. The campaign features Kate Moss and British comedian David Walliams, best known for his television sketch show Little Britain. In the campaign, these two stars encourage people to do something funny for money, which will not only drive the objectives of Comic Relief forward, but also create a culture of happiness and positivity, which is not always possible with many charities.
Walk the Walk
Quite appropriately, the Comic Relief T shirts not only communicate a certain set of values but also embody these values. The entire collection of T shirts was manufactured in Africa using organic cotton that is also Fairtrade certified, making it sustainable for the environment and supportive of local employment. All cotton was sourced from co-operatives in Mali.
Purchase the T Shirts
All shirts are available in TK Maxx around Britain and will cost £6.99 for children’s sizes and £14.99 for all adult sizes. All profits will go to the charity to support their cause, showing that fashion can go far in benefiting charitable work. In the past the Comic Relief T shirts have proved to be a massive hit. In 2009 Stella McCartney designed a collection of Tees for the charity and raised a whopping 3 million pounds. Last year Vivienne Westwood made the Comic Relief T shirt designs, which was also a huge success.
