Top Broadband Using Countries
The UK is a fairly small country but hey, we seem to do alright in terms of the amount of technology that is available to us. The New Zealand Herald this month publicised findings of a global survey taken by leading International research house Strategy Analytics which provided findings as to which country had the highest percentage of broadband users. The Survey did not Included either Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband or any Mobile Broadband services
The UK came in at number 14 with a slightly low (in my mind) score of 67% of UK residents accessing broadband in their households.
South Korea topped the poll with a whopping 95% of households accessing broadband. Experts have put this down to Korea’s highly urbanised population and the existence of government backed broadband policy.
From the Herald:
Five of the top 10 scorers were Asian countries, underlining the rapid broadband growth in the region.
It is interesting however that the leading country South Korea is in front by nearly 10%, could this be down to the governments willingness and ability to provide a service which meets the need of a fairly large country. As I wrote yesterday at my frustation that the UK government was not going to install WiMAX in the UK thus providing an extensive Broadband service for all 60.8 Million of us Brits!
Could this be a classic case of the powers in charge not backing a scheme which could technically benefit a huge number of people who either cannot get connected to the internet or cannot afford to be connected?
Whether the UK will jump up the list in the next couple of years remains a mystery but I hope it does not only for the sake of being ‘higher in the rankings‘ but rather so that people who genuinely need a fast connection get it!
